"Saving Face" - Maintaining dignity or prestige.
This is a symbolic painting representing the extremes people go to just to make themselves look the best (or what they think is the best). The girl tries to be beautiful and thin... slick blonde hair, painted up blue eyes... yet she is flawed, for her face is only a mask, death reveiling itself underneith. Her frame is clearly skeletal as well, much like the models on the runway who just might break in half if one were to fall down.
The red balloon she holds in the other hand is another symbol of death. In some countries it means to let go of the memory of a deceased child, and in some it is a bad omen. Any way you put it, or any way you see it, she could almost be "Death" itsself.
